In certain applications involving DC motors, it is sometimes desirable to add resistance to the armature circuit to limit the amount of current in the circuit when the motor is started. Generally, a rheostat is chosen to limit the armature current in the circuit to approximately 1.25 to twice the rated amperes, at the moment the machine is started. Series resistance can also be employed as a form of limited speed control on various motors, such as DC series or shunt motors.
